Carbon use efficiencies defined in relation to ecosystem carbon flows

A new paper (Xu coauthored with Sinsabaugh, Moorhead, and Litvak) accepted in New Phytologists. In this paper, we looked at the CUE of plant (CUEa) and microbes (CUEh) and their correlation. The inverse correlation between CUEa and CUEh stabilize the ratio m/GPP (= CUEa Ÿ CUEh) / (1-CUEe)) with respect to MAT by counterbalancing the apparent temperature sensitivities of the component processes. At the ecosystem scale, the counterbalance is affected by modulating soil organic matter stocks. The results suggest that a u/GPP value of ~0.13 is a homeostatic steady state for ecosystem carbon fluxes at large scale.
